Jorge Chávez International Airport , known as Aeropuerto Internacional Jorge Chávez in Spanish, is Peru's main international and domestic airport, serving more than 6 million passengers per year. It is located in Callao, about 10-11 km (6-7 miles) from Downtown Lima. Callao is the port city now fully integrated with Lima, the nation's capital. For many years it was the hub for now defunct Aeroperú and Faucett, one of the oldest airlines in Latin America. Now it serves as a hub for many aviation companies. The airport is named after the pioneer Peruvian aviator Jorge Chávez Dartnell and was inaugurated in 1960 to replace the old Limatambo airport located in San Isidro which was surrounded by new residential areas. It was privatized in 2001 and is now managed by Lima Airport Partners ( LAP ), owned by Fraport AG Frankfurt Airport Services Worldwide. at the begining of 2005 the first phase of the renovation project was completed. It included Peru Plaza Shopping Center and a new concourse with 16-19 gates, about 7 of them with boarding bridges . On June 2007 a four-stars hotel was opened in front of theairport terminal terminal. The next phase will include the expansion of the concourse with 13 additional boarding bridges, which will be completed in 2009. Jorge Chávez International Airport was awarded the title of best airport in South America by Skytrax World Airports Awards 2005.
